Smoo Cave

Our little story...

After reading a legend about Smoo Cave, we went to see the cave on December 24, before going to do some shopping for Christmas Eve. At that time, it was the northernmost point in the world we had been to. The cave is not quite by the sea, we followed the path which went straight up towards the North, up to the large cliffs which fell into the water. The cave is directly connected to the sea by a river which cascades out of the rock into a small room accessible by a wooden pontoon. Archaeological research has shown that there would have been medieval, probably Viking, activity in the cave. As for the legend that is told, it says that a wizard named Donald MacKay hid here. He was also called the Sorcerer of Reay, and he was fleeing the Devil who wanted to take his soul. The wizard quickly became famous in Sutherland. He was described as a cruel and merciless man, without shadow.
